What are hemorrhoids?
Hemorrhoids are swollen or inflamed veins in the anus and lower rectum. They can affect people of all ages and are quite common. Hemorrhoids can be itchy, painful and can potentially cause bleeding during bowel movements. There are two types of hemorrhoids, internal and external. External hemorrhoids are located under the skin around the anus, and the delicate skin there can be easily irritated and bleed during a bowel movement. Blood clots can form in external hemorrhoids and cause a great deal of pain and inflammation. Internal hemorrhoids are more subtle and less noticeable. However, straining during a bowel movement can irritate the delicate surface of the hemorrhoid and cause bleeding or pass the hemorrhoid outside the anus. When this happens it is called a protruding or prolapsed hemorrhoid and can be very painful. Hemorrhoid symptoms include painless bleeding during bowel movements that results in bright red blood, itching, irritation, or swelling in the anus, the formation of a sensitive or painful lump near the anus, and sometimes anal leakage.
The symptoms of hemorrhoids are obviously quite unpleasant. Many people have searched for the best hemorrhoid treatments.
Diagnosing hemorrhoids
Hemorrhoids can be diagnosed from a medical history and an exam. External hemorrhoids are generally obvious. Your doctor may perform a digital rectal exam.
Home treatment
There are simple hemorrhoids home treatments that you can use to ease symptoms. People vary on their opinion of the best hemorrhoid treatment. Options range from products like Hemclear to the items listed below.
Get more fiber. Add more fiber to your diet from food or a fiber supplement. When consumed with enough liquid, fiber softens stools and makes them easier to pass, reducing pressure on hemorrhoids.
Exercise. 20 - 30 minutes of aerobic exercise usually helps to stimulate bowel function.
Sitz. A sitz bath can relieve itching, irritation, and spasms of the sphincter muscle. Pharmacies sell small plastic tubs that fit over a toilet seat, or you can sit in a regular bathtub with a few inches of warm water.
Seek topical relief. Over-the-counter hemorrhoid creams containing a local anesthetic can temporarily soothe pain. You can also try Calmovil it is formulated to support healthy veins, improve blood flow, and reduce inflammation.
Procedures to treat hemorrhoids
Some hemorrhoids can’t be managed with home treatments alone. This is usually because symptoms continue or because an internal hemorrhoid has prolapsed. There are some minimally invasive treatments are available.
Band it. A small elastic band is put around the base of a hemorrhoid. The hemorrhoid will shrink. It takes two to four procedures, done six to eight weeks apart, to completely eliminate the hemorrhoid. There are complications in rare cases and these complications can be severe.
Hemorrhoidectomy. This is a surgical option. You may need this if you have large protruding hemorrhoids, persistently symptomatic external hemorrhoids, or internal hemorrhoids that return despite rubber band ligation. This procedure cures 95% of cases and has a low complication rate — however, it is extremely painful and requires a hospital stay.
Staples. A newer alternative to traditional hemorrhoidectomy is called stapled hemorrhoidopexy. This procedure treats bleeding or prolapsed internal hemorrhoids.
